چکیده

Critical points and singularities are encountered in the study of critical phenomena in probability and physics. We present recent results concerning the values of such critical points and the nature of the singularities for two prominent probabilistic models, namely percolation and the more general random-cluster model. The main topic is the statement and proof of the criticality and universality of the canonical measure of bond percolation on isoradial graphs (due to the author and Ioan Manolescu). The key technique used in this work is the star–triangle transformation, known also as the Yang–Baxter equation. The second topic reported here is the identification of the critical point of the random-cluster model on the square lattice (due to Beffara and Duminil-Copin), and of the criticality of the canonical measure of the random-cluster model with q ≥ 4 on periodic isoradial graphs (by the same authors with Smirnov). The proof of universality for percolation is expected to extend to the random-cluster model on isoradial graphs. Mathematics Subject Classification (2010). Primary 60K35; Secondary 82B20.

Self-organized criticality driven by deterministic rules

We have investigated the essential ingredients allowing a system to show self-organized criticality ~SOC! in its collective behavior. Using the Bak-Sneppen model of biological evolution as our paradigm, we show that the random microscopic rules of update can be effectively substituted with a chaotic map without changing the universality class. Using periodic maps SOC is preserved, but in a diff...

Criticality as it could be: Organizational invariance as self-organized criticality in embodied agents

This paper outlines a methodological approach to generate adaptive agents driving themselves near points of criticality. Using a synthetic approach we construct a conceptual model that, instead of specifying mechanistic requirements to generate criticality, exploits the maintenance of an organizational structure capable of reproducing critical behavior. Our approach captures the well-known prin...

Driving-induced crossover: from classical criticality to self-organized criticality.

We propose a spin model with quenched disorder which exhibits in slow driving two drastically different types of critical nonequilibrium steady states. One of them corresponds to classical criticality requiring fine-tuning of the disorder. The other is a self-organized criticality which is insensitive to disorder. The crossover between the two types of criticality is determined by the mode of d...

From Surface to Random Criticality in Layered Planar Ising Models. Typeset Using Revt E X

A general case of a spatially nonuniform planar layered Ising model, or an equivalent quantum Ising chain, is analysed with an exact functional real space renormalization group. Various surface, finite size, quasiperiodic and random layer (McCoy-Wu) universality classes are obtained and discussed within a single theoretical framework leading to new insights into the nature of random criticality...

Nonequilibrium Phase Transitions in Epidemics and Sandpiles

Nonequilibrium phase transitions between an active and an absorbing state are found in models of populations, epidemics, autocatalysis, and chemical reactions on a surface. While absorbingstate phase transitions fall generically in the DP universality class, this does not preclude other universality classes, associated with a symmetry or conservation law. An interesting issue concerns the dynam...
